1.Armor Carrier
A component of the armor sample or armor panel whose
primary purpose is to the ballistic panel provide a means of
supporting and securing the armor garment to the user. These
carrier are not generally ballistic resistant.
2.Armor Panel The portion of an armor sample that generally consists of
an external carrier and its internal ballistic protectiv components
(s)(e.g.,the front and back panels).
3.Armor Sample One complete armor garment comprised of a single
wraparound style jacket, or a set (two) of front and back armor
panels.
4.Backface Signature(BFS) The depth of the depression made in the backing
material,created a nonpenetrating projectile impact,measured
from the plane defined by the front edge of the backing material
fixture. For armortested on built up or curved backing material,
the BFS is measured from the plane defined by the top edges of
the depression or crater formed the impact.
5.Backing Material A homogenous block of nonhardening oil base modeling
clay, placed in contact with the back of the armor panel during
ballistic testing.
6.Backing Material Fixture A box fixture containing the backing materlal, typically
comprised of a rigid frame constructed Ballistic Limit testing.
7.Baseline ballistic Limit The experimentally derived, statistically calculated impact
velocity at which a projectile is expected to completely penetrat
an amor component(sample, panel or ballistic panel)50% of the
time(V50).This velocity is also the velocity at which a projectile
is expected to be stopped by the armor 50% of the time(V50).
8.Ballistic Panel The protective component of armor sample or panel,
primarily consisting if ballistic resistant materials, usually
enclosed in a nonremovable cover.the ballistic panel is normally
retained within the armor sample or panel by a separate fabric
carrier, and may be removable from the carrier.
9.Certification of Compliance Mnufacturer's affidavit(certification)that a production
unit of body armor meets(complies with)all of requirements of
this standard for the labeled protection classification.
10.Compliance NIJ approval, after successful ballistic performance testing
to this standard,of a body armor model submitted to the NIJ
Compliance Testing Program(CTP) |
